The Reading Experience

I’ll be honest: When I read the description for Dungeon Crawler Carl, I thought: “This sounds like one of those embarrassing fantasy parodies that tries to mask a lack of substance with absurd ideas.” A cat in armor? A dungeon that acts like a mean board game? A main character whose best quality is his sarcasm? Sounds like a recipe for disaster, or at least some serious eye-rolling.

But then I started reading. And suddenly, I was hooked.

Dinniman takes the craziest idea and runs with it, and he does it so seriously that you forget how out there it is. Instead of a cheap slapstick show, you get a world that feels alive, dangerous, and, above all, logical. The rules of the dungeon aren’t explained in long, boring info dumps, but rather through Carl’s experiences, and that makes all the difference. I’ve rarely read a book that drew me into its world so quickly.

Carl and Princess Donut are a perfect match. He’s the cynical survivor who just wants to be left alone, and she’s the egocentric cat who constantly causes chaos but remains loyal. Their interactions are sometimes hilarious, sometimes surprisingly touching, but never cheesy or contrived. I was really surprised by Donut’s development from a superficial diva to a character who takes responsibility.

The writing style is smooth, the dialogue is on point, and the plot moves along without any unnecessary fluff. My only complaint is that the phrase “cried out” appears a bit too often, but in a book that otherwise gets so much right, it’s a minor detail I’m happy to overlook.

Conclusion

I found Dungeon Crawler Carl really entertaining. It had everything: action, humor and depth. I was hooked from the first page to the last. I’m excited to see if the sequel can live up to the promise of this first one.

Until then: If you’re after something a bit different but still high-quality, this is definitely worth a read.
